Life with Braces

Will braces hurt?

bracesGetting braces put on your teeth doesn’t hurt. However, your teeth might feel sore afterwards. Most patients reported it is uncomfortable rather than painful. This discomfort usually lasts for up to a week, but rarely, is it too uncomfortable to deal with. If needed, we advise our patients to have over-the-counter pain relievers.

How long will it take to get used to my braces?

Most patient will get used to the braces within a month. After a couple of months, you won’t even notice they are there.

How do I keep my teeth clean?

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is critical during all stages of your treatment to ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy throughout your orthodontic treatment. Regular visits to your general dentist for checkups and cleaning are also essential.

Brushing and flossing your teeth with braces on is very different to brushing without braces. Our friendly team member will show you brushing and flossing techniques to clean your teeth and gums around the braces.

For more information about brushing with braces, please refer to our page BRUSHING WITH BRACES.

Foods to avoid

Breakage of braces or any orthodontic appliance during orthodontic treatment can potentially prolong your treatment time and the end results may be less than ideal. Therefore, we strongly recommend diet modification and a change in how food is consumed during your treatment.

It is best to avoid hard or sticky foods such as nuts, popcorns, caramel toffees, hard lollies, ice cubes, chips etc. Whole fruits and vegetables such as apples and carrots should be cooked or cut into small pieces and eaten carefully with your back teeth.
